BYOD and BYOT to school?

Bring your own device (BYOD) (also called bring your own technology, BYOT) starts to become popular in schools with the personal adoption of anytime anywhere mobile learning technology. Most students have their own smart devices like smart phones, iPod touch, iPad etc. The foreseen benefit of BYOD programs is the lower cost for archiving a mobile learning program than a conventional school-supplied device rollout. Students should be given an opportunity to be the able to choose and use the device they’re most comfortable with. The co-producing ability with fellow mates and teachers is enhanced with this personalized learning and problem solving multi-device classroom.


Students may choose the most appropriate device for a given task, by switching between devices among each other. The
 challenges associated
 with BYOD has grown with its popularity like compatibility, security and management. The accession through digital devices in a realistic way is really going to be authoritative. 
The benefits and goals must be studied before enforcing the technology for your educational goals, which can help you to measure progress.

Permission: Before bringing any device to school, a written plan should be approved from parents and teachers.

Network: On campus devices with Wi-Fi connectivity support should be allowed and depending on the age, students may be given a pass. A secure primary network with filtered access must be acquired through the LAN. Personal devices must clear off the security risk assessment on the school network.  A separate guest network can be used to give advantage to the temporary users.

Update Policy: The guidelines for what, when, and how students can use the devices on campus must be determined. Acceptable Use Policy to Responsible Use Policy must be clearly defined.

IT support protocols: The responsibility reflecting the requirement of students with day to day IT problem, a help is required to control and manage access on personal devices, for the maintenance by a student-run help.

Teacher training: Lessons to have knowledge of multiple platforms to develop them professional basic troubleshooting information.

Infrastructure and additional support: The students who doesn’t have any device or can’t afford may earn it by working at the schools by the stock of additional devices.


A flexible platform. BYOD can be a big change for your school. Staff, teachers, administrators and students must be flexible and prepared for unexpected situations.  It will be a learning and adaption process for everyone.

School should set up a clear BYOD policy to give a backbone-supporting system for teachers and students. The parameters to implement a BYOD program in a correct and broader ways should be optional. Students who do not participate in BYOD will not be condemned instead substitute modes of participation should be available. The protocol for right online behaviors with cyber-safety monitoring rules throughout the course of the school year. The reminders through email alerts and messages must be reinforced about safe online behaviors.  If a device is lost or stolen the user is responsible for his/her own device, including lost or corrupted data on those devices.
